This crazy WEEK!

On Monday, we had our field trip to the Ohio Supreme Court and Ohio State Capital-which were both phenomenal! :) We had a long recess and completed some Math practice and read some of City of Ember.

On Tuesday, we practiced algebraic expressions in Math Workshop and how to use a formula sheet in the morning. In the afternoon, we read City of Ember, worked on trying to complete our Ohio Inventor trading cards and then went to our outdoor classroom to finish up our lighting investigation for the Ohio Energy Project. **Students also brought home the rest of their FREE supplies like 3 LED lightbulbs, a LED nightlight, a faucet aerator and a shower aerator....

On Wednesday, we spent the entire morning taking the Math AIR test. Some, actually most, worked extremely hard to show what they know. Kudos for that! In the afternoon, we read City of Ember, read independently/finished our trading cards and fossil study work, went to Art and then finished up Science by testing appliances to see how much energy they use. We tested: a crockpot, hair dryer, straight iron, phone and charger, just the charger, laptop and charger, ipad cart and Lucky's light. The crockpot and hair dryer used the most energy and the technology used the least...this led the kids to come to the conclusion that appliance that also use heat or thermal energy, use more energy! (And that Mr. L was correct that my phone charger doesn't use energy unless my phone is plugged in...)

Today, we had meeting where we discussed our passions. Mrs. Bednar's class invited us to their passion project showcase next week and that prompted our discussion. Our discussion led them to ask to start some "clubs." So, on Monday, those that are interested will come up with all the logistics for their club of choice. The clubs will meet on "B" day (since I don't have a duty and can monitor). Some of the clubs might be: debate, film, reading, football, crafts, gymnast, video games, etc. This afternoon, we read more from City of Ember, read independently/worked on finishing our trading cards, started a new story in StoryWorks and learned some new vocabulary with it too and did some free writing. Then, we decided to use inspiration from Lina in The City of Ember, and watched a video about the book, Ada's Violin, about an up-cycled orchestra where the people of a "slum" in South America (I think) have created an entire orchestra of instruments from trash. We planned out our ideas and students will be looking at home for recycling and used items to bring in tomorrow so that we can create new things!
